SEO across the West Midlands

The West Midlands is not one market. Birmingham professional services, Black Country manufacturing, Solihull retail and Coventry engineering all behave differently in search. We're based in Coventry, in the middle of it, and we work with businesses right across the region and Warwickshire, whatever it is they sell.

Search in the West Midlands

The region gets searched in two quite different ways. There are the town and city searches, where somebody has already decided roughly where they want to buy from, and there are the region-wide ones, where they haven't. When we pulled the regional data in September 2026, the region-wide searches were consistently the less contested of the two, largely because most businesses put their effort into their own town and comparatively few make any case for the region around it.

The size of the West Midlands also makes the map pack behave inconsistently across it. A business on the edge of Solihull and a business in central Wolverhampton are both West Midlands businesses, but they surface in completely separate local results and neither appears in the other's. For anyone whose customers travel, or who travels to their customers, the distance between where you are based and where your work actually is matters a great deal more than the regional label does.

Region-wide searchers also tend to be earlier in their thinking. Someone looking across the whole West Midlands has usually not settled on a location, or a supplier, or sometimes a budget, which makes those enquiries different in character from the ones that arrive with a town name attached to them.

Who you are up against

Across a region this size, who you are up against changes with how far your customers will travel. A Wolverhampton business selling to Wolverhampton is competing with other Wolverhampton businesses and with the directories that sit above them. The same business chasing work across the region is suddenly in with Birmingham, where the firms are larger and the marketing spend behind them is bigger. Most owners we talk to are fighting on both fronts at once, and quote-collection sites like Bark are sitting in the middle of the regional searches taking enquiries off both.

Search and competitor data on this page was pulled on 7 September 2026. Rankings move, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a live picture, and ask us for a current read if it matters.

What this means for your sector

Multi-site and multi-branch businesses

The region's geography produces a lot of businesses operating from several sites at once, with branches in Wolverhampton, Dudley and Solihull rather than one location serving everybody. Search splits along the same lines: each branch has its own local map pack to appear in, and above that sits a layer of regional demand that isn't attached to any single town.

Black Country manufacturing

The Black Country's manufacturers are long-established, usually highly specialised, and often selling nationally or internationally while remaining deeply local businesses. Their buyers search by specification rather than by place: the alloy, the process, the tolerance, the certification. They arrive already knowing the technical vocabulary, and they use it.

Birmingham-adjacent professional services

A great many professional firms in the region sit just outside Birmingham and sell into it. Birmingham's own results are contested by larger firms with real budgets behind them, while the regional searches reach a similar buyer against noticeably lighter competition. It is one of the clearest places in the West Midlands where the wider term and the city term are worth separating.

Field service and coverage-area businesses

Anyone who travels to the customer rather than the other way round, which across a region this size covers a great many businesses. With no premises for a searcher to walk into, visibility rests almost entirely on what the map pack can read about the business: the service area set on the Google Business Profile, and the weight of reviews behind it.

How the work itself runs

The actual mechanics do not change by location: the audit, the technical fixes, the on-page work, the reporting cadence. Rather than repeat all of it here, it lives in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do local SEO for businesses located in the West Midlands?+

Yes, anywhere in the region, and Warwickshire alongside it. We're based in Coventry, so even the far side of the Black Country is a comfortable drive for a first meeting, and the work itself is largely remote once we're going. We take on any kind of business here, whether you run a single site or branches in several towns. We claim Coventry, the West Midlands and Warwickshire and nothing wider than that, because a small team claiming national coverage wouldn't be telling you the truth.

How long does it take to see results from SEO?+

Three to six months before the direction is clear, and closer to a year before the compounding really shows. It depends a great deal on how competitive your sector is and how much history your site has behind it. Anyone promising results in a fortnight is either working in a market with no competition or not being straight with you. Early on you'll see impressions and rankings move before enquiries do, because the leading indicators shift first.

What is the difference between SEO and AI GEO?+

SEO is about ranking in search results: the ordinary blue links, and the map pack for local searches. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is about being the source an AI answer quotes, whether that's Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot. They share most of their foundations, so good SEO work is rarely wasted on AI visibility. What differs is what gets rewarded: AI answers lean on being quotable and on being talked about consistently across the web, so unlinked mentions of your business count for more there than in traditional search.

Should I do SEO or PPC?+

They solve different problems. PPC buys visibility this afternoon and stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build and then keeps working without a daily budget behind it. Plenty of businesses run both, using paid search to find which terms actually produce customers while the organic side builds. Which way round it goes for you depends on how urgently you need enquiries, what your margins tolerate, and how expensive the auction is in your sector. It's one of the first things worth deciding properly rather than guessing at.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings?+

No, and neither can anybody else. Nobody outside Google has control of the ranking systems, which is why Google's own guidance is to be wary of an agency that guarantees positions. What can be committed to is the work itself, honest reporting on it, and the baseline it gets measured against, so you can see what changed and what it changed from. A percentage improvement with no starting number next to it is not a result.

What happens if I stop doing SEO?+

It does not switch off the way paid advertising does. The content, the links and the reviews you have earned stay where they are, so rankings tend to slide gradually rather than disappear, and how fast depends mostly on how hard your competitors keep pushing. That cuts both ways: it is why SEO takes a while to take hold, and why it holds on for a while once it has.

Does SEO work for a small business with only a few pages?+

Often better than it does for a large one. Local searches are narrower than national ones, and the map pack that sits above the results is decided by things that have nothing to do with the size of your website. A five-page site for a single-location business can and does outrank far bigger competitors for the searches that actually matter to it. The number of pages you have is not the constraint people assume it is.
